Overview  

The jobholder is responsible to provide leadership to the nursing team for the expanded KidSTART@NUH program at NUH. The nurse manager is expected to take a leadership role in ensuring the highest quality of nursing care in the community for our KidSTART@NUH families. He/She also has an important responsibility to groom and develop existing nursing staff for leadership roles in the expanded KidSTART@NUH program.

This program has been highly successful in helping underprivileged pregnant mothers deliver a healthy baby and to ensure that the newborn gets the best start in life. Nurses perform a very important role in KidSTART@NUH by facilitating medical care and facilitating compliance with doctors’ instructions for our teenage mothers and other underprivileged pregnancies. Nurses perform home visitation to address patients’ needs at their home. Nursing team together with our other team members, helping to reduce social inequality and to ensure that the pregnant mothers and their children enjoy the best nursing care possible. The nurse manager will provide guidance and perform a leadership role on the day-to-day basis for the nursing team at KidSTART@NUH. She is expected to lead by example and perform home visits to aid the families on the ground. As such, she is responsible for the efficient and effective functioning of the nursing team at KidSTART@NUH and to ensure that the team works closely with medical social workers, dietitians, care management officers, obstetricians, paediatrics and mental health specialists that are part of KidSTART@NUH.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)

  • Perform home visitation for pregnant mothers enrolled in KidSTART@NUH.
  • Ensures compliance to medical and nursing needs of KidSTART families through clinic touchpoints as well as through social media contacts as well as visiting mothers at home.
  • Leads, supervises, coaches, counsels, and supports KidSTART@NUH nursing staff to deliver high level of nursing care for our underprivileged mothers many of which has had very challenging backgrounds.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates nursing standards and ensures high quality home visitation in the community.
  • Facilitates and guides staff to provide high quality nursing care to pregnant mothers and their existing children. 
  • Plans and prepares nursing staff roster and assignment.
  • Applies understanding of medico-legal matters, coaches and guides her nurses in this area during execution of their nursing duties.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Clinicians to develop, implement and evaluate care paths and care plans.
  • Manages more complex public relation aspects of the KidSTART@NUH
  • Conducts and evaluates nursing audits on nursing care standards and initiates actions for improvement.
  • Ensures staff receives proper orientation, appropriate training and evaluates staff competency prior to them functioning independently in their roles.
  • Active leadership role in team huddles, multi-disciplinary specialist rounds, and other specialized activities of KidSTART@NUH.
  • Provides support and guidance to nursing staff in their daily delivery of care.
  • Performs formative and summative assessment of nursing staff and nursing students.
  • Acts as a resource person and liaison for clinical, training and service matters.
  • Collaborates with Senior Nurse Manager, Nurse Clinicians and Nurse Educators in consistently providing a creative, nurturing learning environment for patients and staff.
  • Most importantly, to groom and develop existing staff so that they can upgrade themselves and be promoted to a higher level of competence and staff grade.

 

Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)

  • Appraises and evaluates performance of nursing staff and nursing students in her/his department.
  • Prepares, monitors, and reports the ward/department budget and expenditure.
  • Leads team in quality improvement projects.
  • Conducts quality improvement activities/projects.
  • Takes on additional responsibilities or tasks as assigned by Senior Nurse Manager, Deputy/Assistant Director (Nursing) and Chief Nurse.

 

Qualification Required and Area of Discipline

Degree in Nursing from recognized training institution as approved by Singapore Nursing Board and a post- basic qualification in the relevant nursing specialty.

 

Required Competencies and Capabilities (Skills, Experiences and Professional Licences)

  • Registered Nurse with at least 11 years of post-registration clinical experience, of which 2 years must be spent as Nurse Manager II
  • Possesses good inter-personal and managerial skills
  • Good computer skills and proficient in MS Office applications such as MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Display compassion and have a positive and caring attitude
