Job Description

 

The Challenges

 

The Senior Medical Technologist will perform routine histological tests in the Department of Pathology for use in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)

 

  • Supervise and participate in the performance of Histology laboratory procedures including, but not limited to, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining. Perform frozen sectioning when required.
  • Perform internal quality control procedures, block checks and ensure compliance of all quality control measures.
  • Monitor and regulate quality assurance activities within section.
  • Assist in the implementation of local policies in the work area and recommend changes / procedures in the work processes.
  • Provide technical assistance, instruction and consultation to staff members and pathologists for resolution of technical problems.
  • Assist with the investigation and documentation of adverse events.
  • Coach new laboratory personnel on laboratory procedures and safety compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with good laboratory practices on all procedures in accordance with the laboratory protocols, SOPs and Laboratory Safety Manual guidelines.
  • Assist with drafting and updating of laboratory protocols.
  • Assist section head to supervise in day to day operations.
  • Plan staff rosters as required.
  • Assist in all troubleshooting and problem solving of all quality control and operational matters.
  • Conduct in-house Continuous Medical Education (CME) for laboratory personnel.
  • Assist section head in continuous monitoring of staff performance and communicate expectations on targets on a regular basis.
  • Prepare and participate in accreditation processes.
  • Capable of handling after office hour duty to support liver transplant and renal explant services.

 

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities (20%)

 

  • Coordinate and participate in specialized laboratory procedures requiring advanced skill and theoretical knowledge; assist in the development and evaluation of new procedures and techniques.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new equipment.
  • Lead or participate in work improvement projects as required.
  • Assist in planning of capital and operating budget.
  • Assist in preparation and monitoring progress of annual work plan.
  • Perform any other related duties assigned by the supervisor.

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualification

 

  • Degree in Biological / Life Sciences/ Biomedical Science preferred.


Experience

 

  • 5 years of relevant experience in a Histology laboratory preferred.

  • Able to function effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to handle unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent though and action.
