The Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM), NUH is hiring a Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist/Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist for bench work, data analysis and orthogonal confirmation. This role is essential for the hands-on, day-to-day operation of the lab, which include three core technical phases, i.e. wet-lab processing, primary bioinformatics, and methodological validation & verification. This is a key position necessary to lead the wet lab section of the newly setup Genomic Diagnostics Lab (GDL) to support NUH’s newly setup National University Centre for Genomic Medicine (NUGEM) and the National Precision Medicine’s Initiatives.

 

Job Duties

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Lead, strategises and oversee the provision of wet lab processing for advanced genomic services, ensuring comprehensive management of all clinical and developmental aspects. These include but are not limited to Sample Processing, Library Preparation & Sequencing processes, Validation & Verification of Test Protocols.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of scientific principles in service delivery, with a focus on troubleshooting and optimizing laboratory assays.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of bioinformatics tools for primary data analysis, Primers & Probes design and SNP-ID analysis.
  • Supervise the laboratory’s participation in external quality control programmes to maintain compliance with clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Lead, mentor and train Medical Laboratory Technologists/Scientists for wet lab and bioinformatics processes.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including clinicians, medical laboratory scientists, operations and administrative personnel, to drive integrated service delivery.
  • Participate in the management process within the laboratory, including human resource management, staff development and strategic planning.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by reporting officer.

 

Job Requirements

  • Good Class Honours’ Degree/BSc/MSc/PH.D. in genetics, genomics, human genetics, or a related field within the biological sciences or life science discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in wet-lab processing and methodological verifications.
  • Hands on experience with strong technical expertise in molecular biology and NGS workflows.
  • Knowledge and experience of quality management systems, including compliance with ISO15189 and/or CAP standards or equivalent
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and data interpretation.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and optimize protocols independently.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills for regulatory compliance.
  • Minimum 3 years in a leadership or supervisory position, demonstrating capabilities in leading a team.
  • Positive attitude, proactive mindset and a willingness to take initiatives.
  • High level of attention to details with strong organization skills and ability to work under tight timeline.
