Clinical Coding Specialist, Casemix Office

1. Job Purpose

Responsible for translating narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries and procedures into codes, based on a pre-defined Casemix classification system.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

1. 1. Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)

1. 1. 1. To accurately abstract relevant data and translate the principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses and surgery/procedures of all inpatient and day surgery discharges into ICD 9 CM codes from discharge summary/case notes/operation reports/histology reports in accordance with the national and hospital coding standards within the stipulated time frame for subvention.

1. 1. 2. To interact closely with clinicians for clarifications / confirmation / feedback on documentation of principal diagnosis, secondary diagnosis and surgery/procedure/treatment if necessary that may affect coding accuracy and correct subvention. 

1. 1. 3. To keep abreast of latest coding standards and update coding knowledge/coding skills.

1. 1. 4. To work independently and act as a mentor to junior coders

1. 2.  Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)

1. 1. 1. To manage and track daily uncoded/coders workload report

1. 1. 2. To work closely with the supervisor so as to continuously improve the current work processes in Casemix office

1. 1. 3. Participate in quality assurance programs including internal audit programmes

1. 1. 4. Senior Coders to be involved in training of new coders/internal audits

1. 1. 5. Able to understand departmental operational workflow and resolve any issues independently

1. 1. 6. Carry out any other projects and duties as assigned

3. Job Specification

1. 1. Qualification: Basic Medical Degree or State Registered Nurse qualification

1. 2. Experience:
      1. At least 2 years experience in Clinical Coding

1. 3. Skills:
      1. Ability to work independently and a good team player
      2. Ability to coach and mentor       
      3. Good interpersonal skills, attitude and aptitude
      4. Computer literacy
