Instrument Technician, Central Sterile Support*
Overview
The Instrument Technician is responsible for providing sterile and reusable surgical instruments and equipment by demonstrating competence in all aspects of sterile processing. The role involves supervising and performing receiving, sorting, decontamination, inspection, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of sterile items to Operating Theatres, Specialist Outpatient Clinics (SOC), inpatient wards, and procedural rooms.
The job holder ensures the smooth and safe functioning of the Central Sterile Support Department (CSSD) in accordance with established standards and protocols.
Primary Job Responsibilities (80%)
- Ensure the daily smooth operation of the CSSD, including receiving, sorting, decontamination, inspection, packing, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies
- Ensure staff adhere to established standards when operating washer-disinfectors, dryers, ultrasonic washers, and sterilizers
- Perform and evaluate sterilizer test indicators and monitor sterilization outcomes
- Conduct inventory management of sterile linen and surgical consumables
- Issue sterile supplies to all supported areas in a timely and accurate manner
- Track preventive maintenance (PM) schedules for washer-disinfectors, dryers, ultrasonic washers, and sterilizers, ensuring all PM activities are up to date
- Perform routine cleaning of the CSSD storage areas
- Demonstrate proper use, care, and handling of equipment
- Report defective equipment and take appropriate follow-up actions for repair or replacement
- Identify and notify the In‑Charge of surgical instruments requiring repair or replacement
- Liaise with Operating Theatre nurses regarding consignment instrument sets required for procedures
- Facilitate effective teamwork and ensure smooth workflow within the CSSD
- Communicate clearly and provide proper handover of essential information and critical events to colleagues, In‑Charge staff, and supervisors
Secondary Responsibilities (20%)
- Supervise, mentor, and guide junior staff in their daily duties
- Participate in clinical governance, service improvement, and quality assurance activities
- Demonstrate awareness of current healthcare practices, infection control standards, and sterilization guidelines
- Assist in maintaining accurate instrument tracking data and ensure systems are kept up to date
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Senior Instrument Technician, Instrument Specialist, or Assistant/Deputy Director (Nursing)
Requirements
- Diploma in Engineering or relevant technical qualifications
- WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support (Sterilisation Services) is an added advantage
- Minimum one (1) year of working experience as an Instrument Technical Assistant or relevant experience in CSSD/TSSU is preferred
- Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills
- Good command of written English
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
